A quick Google search will turn up a variety of articles sharing all the ways to stay healthy and eat healthy during the holidays.
But how realistic are they?
The truth is: not great — at least not if you want to enjoy time with friends and family without severely restricting yourself (and potentially driving yourself crazy).
With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of seven realistic tips for enjoying the holidays as healthily as possible, but not so much that they make them miserable!
1) Don’t skip your usual meals.
Eating regularly throughout the day ensures your metabolism is functioning properly and provides your body with the necessary fuel. It also helps control your appetite so your eyes aren’t larger than your stomach at holiday meals or parties. Whether you’re following a grab-and-go meal plan or eating individually, be sure to enjoy breakfast and lunch as usual before heading out for a hearty holiday dinner.
2) Schedule (and prioritize!) your fitness.
Yes, the holidays are a busy time. Yes, it can be very challenging to squeeze in some exercise time. It’s crucial to treat it like any other important meeting or gathering. Detail how to get the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week and write it down. Regular exercise is great for your mental health and also burns extra calories you may consume throughout the season.
3) Indulge – but don’t overindulge.
If you’ve ever tried to be the person at a party waving yummy candy, or the person who tries to stay away from food as much as possible because you’re afraid of giving in to temptation, you know how painful that can be. Simple solution: don’t do it. Grab a smaller plate from the buffet line and fill it up so you can indulge in delicious food without overdoing it. Or, choose a few foods ahead of time and enjoy them instead of trying every little thing.
4) Practice mindful eating.
Mindful eating involves being fully aware of the size, texture, color, smell and taste of food. It really is a great way to slow down and enjoy food like never before. Experts say it can also help you feel full faster, help maintain a healthier weight and, in this case, help you avoid overeating.
5) After meals, walk around the room in circles or stand instead of sitting.
When you’re full, a comfortable seat on the couch or at a table can be very appealing. Here’s the thing: moving around after a meal can get your digestive system working. Instead of squatting, walk around the room or stand. Not only does this help you avoid eating more, it also increases blood flow and kick-starts your metabolism. Win-win.
6) Practice self-compassion.
Despite your best efforts, sometimes you go too far. And, you know what, it doesn’t matter. Forgive yourself and stop holding on. Beating yourself up or feeling guilty won’t get you anywhere, and you’ll likely get stuck in a cycle of self-deprecation. Take a deep breath, tell yourself you’ll do better next time, and get on with your day.
7) Make concrete plans for this season and beyond.
New Year’s resolutions may be overrated, but they can also help, especially if you make your plans before the holidays begin. Make SMART goals around your holiday gatherings and get-togethers so you can enjoy them to the fullest. Then, carry that momentum into the new year by incorporating them into a comprehensive plan for any health goals you want to achieve.
The holidays should be fun, filled with good food, family and friends. Follow these simple tips to enjoy them without going overboard. You will be glad you came to the New Year!
