I don’t have a big sweet tooth, but when the kids want dessert, I want to make sure it’s a healthy version. Dark chocolate fondue is easy to make and fun to dip with fresh fruit or even homemade marshmallows. Because it’s quick to make, we can have a delicious meal in about 10 minutes!
What is hot pot?
Fondue comes from the French word fondre, which means to melt. It is traditionally a cheese fondue made with a variety of melted cheeses. Recently, the recipe has been adapted to use melted chocolate to create a delicious dessert. It’s usually made from milk chocolate, semisweet chocolate chips or even white chocolate and diluted with heavy cream.
This version is low-sugar and dairy-optional because it uses dark chocolate and coconut oil. If you like, you can add a little peanut butter or peppermint extract in place of the vanilla.
How to Make Chocolate Fondue
First, you need to start with good quality chocolate to make chocolate fondue. High-quality chocolate bars taste much better than cheap chocolate bars and are often healthier, too. The best chocolate contains at least 72% cocoa and organic ingredients. If you can’t find dark chocolate, you can mix some bittersweet chocolate with a sweeter chocolate.
It’s also important to heat the chocolate slowly, otherwise it will start to stick and burn. If you have an electric hot pot that works great, but it’s hard to find a non-toxic one. Some of them are stainless steel but still have a non-stick coating on the inside.
I transferred the hot chocolate fondue to my small pot and kept it warm for dipping. You can also use a bowl and reheat as needed.

My favorite options for dipping chocolate fondue are fresh fruit, dried fruit, and homemade marshmallows. Typically, you’ll see people also enjoy dipping things like graham crackers, pretzels, Rice Krispies, Oreos, pound cake, and even potato chips! Our family doesn’t really eat these, but there are still plenty of delicious and healthy hot pot spoons out there.
You can even drizzle some chocolate fondue on top of cheesecake, ice cream, angel food cake, shortbread, and brownies (all healthier versions, of course!).
Chocolate Fondue is perfect for New Year’s Eve (even if you’re staying in for movie night!). It also makes a decadent treat for Valentine’s Day or family date night. It’s so easy to make and the kids love dipping their stuff in it!

In a small saucepan on the stovetop, melt the chopped chocolate and coconut oil over low heat and stir until smooth. Heat gently and stir constantly to avoid burning. You can also use a double boiler over medium heat.

Remove hot chocolate from heat and stir in vanilla extract.

Transfer chocolate mixture to fondue pot, small slow cooker, or bowl.

Heat gently again on stove or pan until desired consistency is reached.
