Marry Me Chicken is a recipe statement, but when you make it you’ll understand why! This version changes the ingredients in the popular recipe so it’s lighter and higher in protein. Juicy chicken paired with a rich, creamy sauce makes this the perfect easy weeknight dinner.
marry me chicken recipe
This recipe was originally developed by a popular food magazine in 2016 before going viral on TikTok. The idea is that if you give it to your significant other, you can look forward to a proposal! Since then, several different versions have emerged, but the taste is essentially the same.
The original recipe is to dredge chicken breasts in all-purpose flour and fry them in a large skillet until golden brown and slightly crispy. Then add heavy cream, parmesan cheese, red pepper flakes and other spices.
My version skips the searing and uses a slow cooker (or Instant Pot) for a simpler chicken dish. This is basically a grab-and-go chicken dinner recipe but still retains all the flavor. I used chicken breasts, but you can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs or cutlets.
I used Greek yogurt instead of heavy cream. It adds creamy flavor but is cleaner and contains more protein. I also don’t add parmesan cheese, but you can add some at the end if you want. The chicken combined with sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, and Italian herbs tastes amazing!
What to serve with marry me chicken
My kids love this with egg noodles, but there are plenty of options. For a low-carb version, try vegetarian noodles (like zucchini or butternut squash). It can also be served with rice, pasta or even potatoes. Baked potatoes or mashed potatoes are both good.
I like to add veggie options to this meal for even more nutrition. Simple options like grilled vegetables or a side salad work well. Here are some more ideas!

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If the sauce is too thick, add a small amount of water or milk before reheating.
Quick Pot Marry Me Chicken
A faster version that will keep you from wanting to take out the slow cooker for days. The chicken is cooked in a rich cream sauce and seasoned with tomatoes and spices.
-
Set the Instant Pot to saute mode. Add olive oil, chopped onion and chopped garlic. Saute for 2-3 minutes or until onions turn translucent. Then, add the sun-dried tomatoes and cook for another minute.
-
Place chicken breasts on top of sautéed mixture. Pour the chicken broth over the chicken, making sure to at least partially cover it.
-
Place the lid on the Instant Pot and set the valve to seal. Cook on high pressure for 10 minutes. The Instant Pot takes a few minutes to come to pressure before the cooking time begins.
-
When finished, allow the pressure to release naturally for 10 minutes, then carefully deflate it.
-
Remove chicken from Instant Pot and set aside. Set the Instant Pot to sauté mode. Add Greek yogurt and spices (except parsley). Let the sauce cook for a few minutes to thicken slightly, stirring occasionally.
-
Shred the chicken with two forks and return to the pan to combine with the sauce. Adjust seasoning if necessary.
-
Serve buttered chicken with pasta, rice, vegetables or mashed potatoes. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley before serving.
