What is edible seaweed?

The cool thing about this smoothie is that it contains seaweed, and I am a huge advocate of including seaweed in a healthy plant-based diet. sAlgae are actually brown, red or green forms of marine algae and have been an important food source for coastal communities for thousands of years. Common seaweeds include dulse, kelp and nori. Throughout history, people around the world have understood how important harnessing seaweed is to their survival. Asian countries have used seaweed in dishes such as sushi and salads for centuries. Pacific Islanders mix it with vegetables. In the British Isles, seaweed is eaten with oatmeal. What’s really interesting is that seaweed provides a rich, sustainable food source that can be grown without the need for land, irrigation or chemicals.

Nutritional value of seaweed

While each type of seaweed has slightly different nutritional profiles, in general they contain fiber, vitamins A, C, E, and K, calcium, folate, iodine, iron, magnesium, niacin, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein . One of the biggest benefits of seaweed is that it can help you meet your iodine needs throughout the day. Seaweed also has unique nutrients such as enzymes, sulfur and antioxidant compounds linked to health benefits. Studies show that seaweed can help reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, and obesity. Learn more about diving into seaweed here.
