Plans are just a backup for when you’re having fun

I didn’t post about Wednesday’s weigh-in yesterday because I wanted to spend the day with Jerry and not bother with my computer. He loved the Valentine’s Day gift I gave him. Our day didn’t go as planned, but we had a great time. He took a day off, which surprised me.

Jerry wanted to do an “old school” date on our date – a walk in the Metroparks, a burger (from a vegetarian restaurant called Unburger Grill), and a movie. Of all the movies, Titanic is now playing in theaters! It’s incredible to me that this movie came out in 1997; Jerry and I didn’t start dating until 1999. I first saw it in the theater with my friend Audrey and I “loved” it. I’ve seen it several times. That’s why Jerry chose the Titanic.

Even Joey and Chick felt the romance in the air yesterday…

However, in the morning, it was “really” cold outside. Jerry said he didn’t know what he was thinking when he planned to go to Metropark. Since I said I was willing to do whatever he planned, I was willing to go – but he said it would be miserable in the cold weather, so I had to agree. So we decided to head out early (the movie didn’t start until 1:00) to kill some time.

We were near JoAnn Fabrics (I love that store!) and I said I wanted to run in and pick up something quick. Jerry said he would tag along, and the moment he walked in, his eyes lit up. Hahaha! He was excited to see the various Star Wars, Marvel and Ghostbusters pieces of fabric. He asked me if I could make him pajama pants and he took the time to pick out the fabric. He couldn’t decide, so these were the four he ended up with.

I felt like we were there for a long time and I asked him when we had to go out and watch a movie. He looked at the time and it was already 1:00! So, needless to say, we missed this movie. However, neither of us were terribly disappointed. We live about 10 minutes from a very large thrift store so we decided to spend Valentine’s Day there. We were tired after staying in two restaurants for too long and decided to go home and make dinner.

I’m still a little surprised Jerry didn’t do anything overly cheesy – that’s his signature! When I got home, I opened my bedroom door to change and then stopped. There were rose petals everywhere and a giant Vermont teddy bear on the bed. I once had a teddy bear like this from him, but Estelle loved it so much that she used to knead it with her paws, causing its fur to fall out. So Jerry bought this one and personalized it with “To my Boo! Love Always, B” written on his feet. (We just need to keep Estelle away from it – wish us luck.)

I love soft stuffed animals and this bear is so comfy and cute. He also gave me what he thought was a “very” tacky gift, knowing I would complain about it but we would both laugh about it. This is the rose in the glass case from Beauty and the Beast (we recently rewatched that movie) with lights surrounding it. He turned it on and it actually worked great with all the random lights in our room.

I don’t like that I keep using words like “corny” and “cheesy” when talking about Jerry’s romantic style (and I say that in a funny way, not trying to disparage him in any way), but sometimes He really went too far. A few years ago, he bought this plaster mold kit that you put your hands together and make a mold out of it and then pour the plaster into the mold. Finally you should punch out your hands.

I can’t believe he spent so much money (I think it was about $35) and I want to return it. Yes, even admitting this, I felt like an asshole and now I regret it – I should have indulged him. But I did feel bad when a few years later I saw the exact same kit (unopened) at Goodwill for $5. I decided to buy it and we would have a great time.

Well, it’s probably been sitting in the closet for the past five years. Yesterday, Jerry suggested we finally do this. We really had a great time! We followed the instructions exactly – first mixed the mold powder with cold water in a bucket. Then quickly reach in and hold still for 3-10 minutes. Then gently pull the hands out, leaving a hand-shaped mold.

Do you think things are going well? If you guessed no, you’re right!

First, I’m sure it expired probably a hundred years ago. But I don’t think that completely ruins it – it’s just powder. Secondly, it’s difficult to keep your hands still like this for long periods of time – especially when the water is cold! My fingers were numb after about two minutes, but it was still very fluid. We watched the timer go from three minutes all the way up to ten, but it still wasn’t stable enough (or even close). We were both cold and couldn’t go on any further. So we pull our hand out and it’s still completely liquid.

So, this project was a huge failure. At least it’s only $5 instead of $35. We had a lot of laughs. This is the best part.

We made dinner together and had a very cold night. Although we didn’t make any plans, we had a great day. I’m so excited to hear about Noah and Rose’s day! As I mentioned before, Rose (his girlfriend) loves Valentine’s Day – it’s her favorite holiday – but she’s never been in a relationship on Valentine’s Day, so she’s never been able to celebrate with someone else.

Noah wanted her to feel special. She “likes” bears (as much as I like cats), so Noah bought her a giant teddy bear (Jerry and Noah didn’t coordinate on purpose, haha), flowers, and chocolates, which he then Brought to Panera where she worked. He gave them to her in front of everyone, which was cute. (Her mom took a video, so here’s a screenshot from it.)

At home, he also gave her an indoor garden kit (something she’s always wanted to do) and something else I can’t remember right now.

I helped her make part of her gift to Noah. She wanted to make a ragdoll-like stuffed cat and dress it up like Noah—a Star Wars shirt and even piercings in the ears, nose, and lips like his. I taught her how to use a sewing machine and helped her make the body.

Rose needs to teach me how to give gifts – whether she’s giving a gift like this or styling the food to look pretty on the plate, it always looks great.

It turned out so cute! She also gave him a bonsai tree (something he mentioned he wanted to get).

It was fun to celebrate Valentine’s Day and I definitely want to do it again next year. Although, I don’t know how I’m going to top the gift I gave Jerry this year 😉

Finally, I just want to point out that today is my third anniversary sober 🙂 Quitting alcohol was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I forgot to mention a few weeks ago that I became a vegetarian two years ago – two years. This shocked me! Another best decision I’ve ever made. <3
