2022 concludes with the meeting of two fitness legends.
At the turn of the decade, Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler were arguably two of the most famous names in bodybuilding. En route to his legendary eight straight Mr. Olympia victories (1998-2005), Coleman relegated Cutler to second place four times (2001, 2003-2005). When the crunch came, Cutler was primed for his long-awaited moment of glory, when he finally toppled Coleman in 2006 and won again in 2007.
Fifteen years later, Coleman and Cutler are two major figures in bodybuilding’s long history. The two former giants have combined for 12 Mr. Olympia titles (8 for Coleman and 4 for Cutler) and have gone on to become influential figures who closely follow the development of the modern sport. On January 10, 2023, a video posted on Cutler’s YouTube channel featured the two idols, joined by bodybuilding YouTube personality Jesse James West, Collaborative training sessions. According to the title of Cutler’s video, the training took place during the 2022 Mr. Olympia weekend from December 16-18, 2022.
The central focus of the three men’s joint workout is to work their respective backs and biceps. In honor of the two legends he trained with, West wore headbands and sleeveless flannels for everyone involved. A ripped towel (reminiscent of these headbands) was Cutler’s signature look early in his career. Coleman, meanwhile, wore sleeveless flannel as a staple of his own during his reign as Mr. Olympia.
Once the workout starts and rolls, there’s no stopping this whirlwind of strength and energy. The trio completed their respective lat pulldown sets, switched to seated cable rows and single-arm machine rows, and alternated traditional dumbbell curls throughout the workout. They didn’t specify the exact number and reps for each set.
As a treat to all spectators and die-hard fans, Coleman and Cutler used the practice as an opportunity to pass on unique anecdotes from Olympian legend to Olympian legend. It could be an insight into the shoes they wore for these two men during the sport’s heyday.
Coleman and Cutler are certainly perceptive enough to know that the bodybuilding they now have to offer is more in line with their vast intellect and experience. That’s how passionate they are about watching Hadi Choopan workout to finally climb Mount Olympia.
For a while, they became competitors. Now, Coleman and Cutler can happily accept their roles as stewards of bodybuilding’s past and future.
